Applications

Sintering ceramics, metals, composites, FGMs, and many other materials is the daily business of our customers.
In the diamond tool industry, the production of brake and clutch linings, the sintering of sputter tagets, in the manufacture of heat sinks, the production of components for the aerospace industry and high performance components for the automotive industry - Dr. Fritsch FAST/SPS-sinter presses are the first choice for many applications.

No other manufacturer has a comparable amount of expertise in industrial applications. More than 1.000 sold FAST/SPS-sinter presses and almost 70 years of experience as the world market leader in this sinter technology speak for themselves.

Friction Materials (Brakes and Clutches)

For manufacturers of friction linings

Benefit from the technical superiority of FAST/SPS-sintering by Dr. Fritsch.

  • Performance
In dynamometer tests, friction linings sintered with FAST/SPS show much better friction coefficients and more homogeneous wear behaviour compared to traditionally sintered materials. Additionally, shear strength performance is improved due to a better connection between friction lining and carrier. This is a direct result of the reduced grain growth by applying a very short sinter cycle.
  • Productivity
Thanks to the direct current heating of the friction pads, cycles of 15-90 minutes can be achieved. Short cycle times result in a higher productivity and make your production more flexible
  • Density / Porosity of parts
The combination of pressure and temperature also allows it to adjust the required density very precisely. Theoretically, much higher densities than on conventional sintering technologies can be achieved
  • Joining of friction material and back plate
Due to the combination of pressure and temperature, the friction material can be sintered to the back plate without the use of soldering material. As a result, the costly solder is saved and one production step can be skipped.

Dr. Fritsch FAST/SPS-presses are operated by almost all world leading manufacturers of friction materials. When driving your motorbike or travelling on high-speed train, there is a high chance that the brake pads have been produced on a Dr. Fritsch FAST/SPS-sinter press.

(Hard) Metals

For manufacturers of (hard) metal parts

Benefit from the technical superiority of FAST/SPS-sintering

  • Process optimization due to shorter cycle times.
  • Short sinter cycles reduce grain grwoth thus produce higher densities and better microstructure of the sinter material
  • Improvement of hard-metal quality by avoiding potential Co losses at high temperatures and with long sintering times.
  • Processing of binder-free hard-metal and/or hard metal with a low binder share (≤3%) without problems, due to the combination of pressure and temperature.
  • Combination of high pressure with very high temperatures of up to 2.400°C; it is thus possible to sinter pure tungsten, for example.
  • Use of alternative binder systems or binderless sintering.

Our Application Center offers vast possibilities for demonstrations and tests to customers and interested companies / institutions.

Advanced Ceramics

For manufacturers of technical & advanced ceramics

Advanced sintering for advanced ceramics: FAST/SPS by Dr. Fritsch

  • Reduction of the cycle time.
  • Extreme reduction of grain growth thus higher densities and microstructures achievable.
  • Material temperatures of up to 2.400°C can be reached.
  • Manufacture the finished components at near net shape
  • Increase productivity, reduce costs.
  • FAST/SPS-sintering is suitable for electrically conductive and non-conductive materials such as B4C, TiB2, SiAlON, Al2O3, SiN, AlN, SiC
  • For many different applications, from body armor to sputter targets

Sputter Targets

For manufacturers of parts for surface coatings and thin-film coatings

Thanks to FAST/SPS-sintering by Dr. Fritsch you finally are in a position to economically process, new, innovative materials and to satisfy the demand for larger components.

  • Enormous savings in energy and time compared to conventional sintering methods.
  • Extremely reduced grain growth which increases density and microstructure properties.
  • FAST/SPS has a smaller influence on the properties of the expensive raw materials than conventional methods have.
  • FAST/SPS-sintering by Dr. Fritsch can be economically applied also for small batches, as well as for research & development.

Dr. Fritsch FAST/SPS machines are operated by wold-leading manufacturers of sputter targets. This technology is especially used for the flexible production of targets out of high-value materials.

Heat Sinks

For manufacturers of heat sinks for the semi-conductor industry

FAST/SPS-sintering by Dr. Fritsch is the optimum process for more process safety.

  • Realize even complicated material combinations such as metal-diamond composite materials. As the market leader in FAST/SPS sintering of diamond tools, Dr. Fritsch provides profound expertise in sintering diamonds.
  • Short sinter cycles reduce grain growth for an increased density and ideal microstructure of the heat sink.
  • Manufacture highly compact components in their net shape, reducing material and energy.
  • Reduce cycle times from approx. 120 to approx. 30 minutes.

Our Application Center offers vast possibilities for demonstrations and tests to customers and interested companies / institutions.

Thermoelectric Materials

Generating electricity out of waste-heat

Thermoelectric Materials generate energy out of the temperature difference between a heat source and the colder surrounding. An example are automobiles where the temperature difference between hot parts, for example the exhaust pipe, and the colder atmosphere outside the car can be used for generating electricity. The thermoelectric materials are mounted around the exhaust pipe and the generated electricity charges a battery which powders the car when driving in the city. Other applications are existant in the field of aeronautics and space technology, the utilization of industrial waste heat and in private households.

FAST/SPS sintering is an essential part of the production of thermoelectric materials. Grain growth needs to be reduced to a minimum in order to ensure the best thermal and electrical conductivity. Therefore a quick sintering process is a must have. The Dr. Fritsch machine portfolio covers all powder metallurgical needs in connection with the production of thermoelectric materials:

  • Mixing (PM 10, PM 20)
  • Dosing (DWA 11)
  • Cold Pressing (CPG 100)
  • FAST/SPS-Sintering (z.B. DSP-507, DSP-515 oder DSP-520)
  • Automation (MFZ 554, FM512, SMV218 or a customized solution)

Dr. Fritsch is the only manufacturer of FAST/SPS sinter presses to cover all other relevant production technologies in powder matallurgy. Dr. Fritsch FAST/SPS-sinter presses are successfully operated by several producers of thermoelectric materials.

Our Application Center offers vast possibilities for demonstrations and tests to customers and interested companies, universities, institutes and other interested parties.
